People with Disabilities, frustrated at their lack of independence will be relieved to know they will now be offered accommodation support, which gives them the possibility to live independently in their own home due to a local and innovative new program through Community Vision.

Community Vision, a Northern Suburbs based community organization has enthusiastically announced a new program, “StepsNStages” that offers accommodation support to assist people with disabilities make the transition from the family home to alternative independent accommodation within the community.

StepsNStages features a number of current and planned options: “Your Move” targets supporting people with disabilities to find extended family/host families or alternative accommodation in their local community or beyond.

The planned “First Steps” houses will provide a seamless transition from living in the family home to short term supported accommodation. The emphasis will be on empowering and skilling individuals to become as independent as possible in all area’s of daily living to enable them to move independently into their own home.

Tracy McNichol, Manager of Community Vision Disability Services said the houses will have more than one tenant; however services will be flexible and responsive to meet the needs of each individual.

“ One individual may like to spend only one day per week in the First Steps house for the first month and then two days for the next month, three for the following month and so on, which means there is a slow transition between living away from the family home and creating a new home,” she said.

Community Vision CEO Jenni Werner said it is natural to want to move out of the family nest at some stage in your life and considers the plans for the new program has a bright future.
