Kinship

Community Vision, is funded through the Disability Services Commission to provide 2 streams of services within its Kinship program. The types of services we provide are:

1. KINSHIP - CHILDREN SERVICES
  • Respite options for people caring for children with disabilities aged from new born through to 17 years old.
2. KINSHIP - ADULT SERVICES
  • Respite and goal based mentorships to people with disabilities aged above 18 years old.

Kinship - Child Options

The Kinship-child option aims to link families to the type of respite support that is most suited to their needs. This can include in-home support or care, community-based support, parent and sibling support groups, and school holiday support through Community Vision's CREATE School Holiday Program. Respite, or support, is provided by Community Vision's Client Support Personnel over 7 days a week (excluding Public Holidays). The services provided are for a short-term basis only. However, if families require extended support they are able to purchase additional services through the program.

What Kinship - Child Options offer?

Kinship participants take part in activities through one of the following two options:

1. Respite
Kinship aims to provide Carers of children with disabilities with the respite support most suitable to their needs. The respite provided can be used for in or out-of-home support on a short-term basis. For example: we can link a Client Support Personnel to provide after school care services on a short term basis or we can arrange for in-home respite over evenings (or even during the week day / weekends).

2. CREATE School Holiday program:
Our CREATE option is a school holiday program aimed at supporting children with disabilities between the ages of 13-17 years old. The program is completely community-based and activities range from rock climbing, bushwalking, attendance at day time theatre events through to expression through creative arts. CREATE runs during the school holidays for at least 3 days per week for 6 hrs per day. Participant numbers are generally limited to 10 participants per day with a minimum of 3 Client Support Staff and volunteers for additional support.

To be eligible for Kinship-Child services participants must be:
  • Living with a disability (intellectual, physical, neurological, cognitive, sensory, or autism).
  • Able to meet the criteria for either level 2 or 3 services with the Disability Services Commission, and live at home with a carer or their family.
  • AND
  • Be under 18 years-of-age, with participants eligible to receive services with the program closes the month they turn 18.

Kinship - Adult Options

The Kinship-Adult option provides an opportunity for adults with disabilities to achieve their own goals. Kinship supports participants to be involved in a number of activities such as a cooking course, joining in with community-based activities, pursuing musical interest while developing independent living skills. All Kinship activities are based in the community, except for the cooking course which runs from Community Vision's Woodvale Day Centre. Kinship's main aim is to support participants to achieve their chosen short term goal. Goals can be related to employment, to study, recreation, or other areas of the individual's life, which they are keen to develop or pursue. Community Vision's Mentors and Client Support Personnel work together with individual participants towards achieving their goals. Achievements are celebrated together as we overcome challenges and/or milestones identified by the participant.

What Kinship-Adult Options offer?

Kinship particpants take part in activities through one of the following three options:

1. Mentorship:
Mentorship is a collaboration between a participant (the person living with a disability) and a mentor (an employee of Community Vision) with similar interests. The mentor can act as a role model/support person/friend in assisting the participant in achieving their personal goals.

The mentoring program is goal-oriented and participants are encouraged and supported to strive for independence and meaningful involvement in the community.
2. Respite
Kinship aims to link individual participants with the respite support most suitable to their needs. The respite provided can be used for in or out of home support on a short-term basis. For example: once-off respite, recreation and community access, transportation, and weekly respite.

Wherever possible, Kinship tries to link participants to meaningful respite of the type and duration of their choice.
3. Kinship Cooking course:
Kinship participants can also take part in a 6 week cooking course, which has been developed so that participants can gain relevant independent living skills. The cooking course is structured to empower participants with practical knowledge about the various aspects of meal preparation, as well as how to shop and structure a menu.
To be eligible for Kinship-Adult services participants must be:
  • Living with a disability (intellectual, physical, neurological, cognitive, sensory, or autism).
  • AND
  • Over 18 years-of-age, with participants eligible to register with the program on January 1st of the year they turn 18.
